Hey girlfriend! Similar to the eventful year it followed, 2021 was filled with ups and downs. We laughed, we cried, but we were entertained through it all. Here are my favorite 2021 movies that kept me on the edge of my seat, made me reflect, or just provided a good laugh.
Horror and Thrillers
Candyman
Candyman, Candyman, Candyman. Hopefully, you didn’t say that first line out loud in a mirror! The 2021 Candyman brings us Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Anthony, a creative artist living in Chicago. As strange occurrences unfold, Anthony unravels a generational puzzle that makes both him and the audience question reality. This isn't your typical jump-scare horror film—it's more like a slow-burn exploration of trauma and racism. By the end, Candyman transforms from a terrifying villain to a dark hero who takes down corrupt cops. Jordan Peele's touch here is undeniably chilling, with a thought-provoking message beneath it all.
Last Night in Soho
A blend of thriller, mystery, and psychological horror, Last Night in Soho stars Anya Taylor-Joy as a young woman whose obsession with the '60s leads her into a time-bending journey. The plot takes some twists and turns, and the climax is incredibly satisfying. It’s a mind-bending thriller that’ll leave you Googling reviews to make sure you didn’t miss anything!
Action and Adventure
Free Guy
If you’re skeptical about Free Guy, I get it—but trust me, it’s a blast. Ryan Reynolds brings his charm as Guy, an NPC in a video game who suddenly gains awareness and decides to become the hero of his own story. What ensues is a hilarious and heartwarming adventure filled with action, romance, and a surprisingly emotional climax. It’s one of those movies that appeals to just about anyone, and I guarantee you'll be rooting for Guy every step of the way.
The Harder They Fall
A bold, star-studded Western with a killer soundtrack—The Harder They Fall is pure cinema. Featuring LaKeith Stanfield, Regina King, and Idris Elba, this movie follows a group of outlaws seeking vengeance and justice. The dynamic characters, riveting plot twists, and the unique blend of reggae and Western themes make it an unforgettable experience. If you’re into epic showdowns and suspense, this is a must-watch.
Chaos Walking
Set in the future but feeling nostalgic, Chaos Walking stars Tom Holland as Todd, a young man in a world where all the women are gone and men’s thoughts are laid bare for everyone to hear. When Todd meets Viola (Daisy Ridley), a mysterious girl from another world, they find themselves on the run. The movie has some great moments and stellar foreshadowing. Did I mention Nick Jonas’ cameo?!
Drama and Biopics
Cruella
Now here’s a hidden gem! Cruella is an origin story that takes us into the life of the notorious villain from 101 Dalmatians. Emma Stone’s portrayal of Cruella is both tragic and captivating, making you almost root for her as she becomes a fashion icon in her own twisted way. This movie blends sarcasm, humor, and action with a
fascinating character study that keeps you emotionally invested. Who knew we'd empathize with the villain so much?
House of Gucci
What a drama! House of Gucci tells the story of the infamous Gucci family, with Lady Gaga absolutely owning the role of Patrizia Reggiani. The film dives deep into family rivalries, betrayal, and greed, offering a gritty and glamorous portrayal of the luxury empire. It’s filled with twists and turns, leaving you both captivated and slightly repulsed. Once the credits roll, you’ll find yourself wanting more of this chaotic yet fascinating world.
Respect
Jennifer Hudson absolutely shines in Respect, the biopic about the legendary Aretha Franklin. From her troubled youth to becoming the Queen of Soul, the movie dives deep into Aretha’s struggles and triumphs. Hudson’s performance is powerful, and you’ll leave the theater feeling both uplifted and emotional. It’s a true testament to Aretha’s legacy, even as the movie uncovers some difficult truths.
Hidden Gems
Malcolm & Marie
This film is raw. Zendaya and John David Washington bring their A-game in this intimate, two-actor drama about love, betrayal, and forgiveness. Shot in black and white, the film’s dialogue-heavy scenes explore the messy nature of relationships. It's painful to watch at times, but so emotionally powerful. Pour a glass of wine before hitting play with this one!
The White Tiger
The White Tiger is an underrated gem that caught me by surprise. This Bollywood film follows Balram, a servant who rises from poverty to power in a tale about corruption and class struggle. The movie is gripping, with moments that leave you questioning your own morals. The ending is unexpected but full of hope, making it a refreshing watch in a year of intense dramas.
Honorable Mentions:
While these were my top picks, there are plenty of other notable films from 2021 like King Richard, Passing, Awake, Judas and The Black Messiah, and In the Heights.
So, what did you think? Which movie are you most excited to watch? Grab some popcorn, cozy up, and happy watching, girlfriend!
