Meditation Beyond the Mat: Finding Peace in the Mundane

Updated: Jan 29

Hey girlfriend! We all know it’s good to meditate every day, but what if you can't find the time or struggle to quiet your mind? Many people believe meditation is all about pure silence and stillness. The truth is, the key to meditation is simply becoming aware of the present moment and finding gratitude in it—this leads to peace and fulfillment. I’ve put together a few simple meditation practices you can incorporate into your daily life.

Cooking Meditation

When you’re cooking, consider how all the ingredients come together to create a unique, delicious dish. Take time to feel the textures of the foods as you chop them, inhale the aromas they release, and appreciate the vibrant colors. Give thanks for the farmers who grew your food, the drivers who delivered it, and the grocers who helped you purchase it. Consider the blessing of having transportation and access to grocery stores, and reflect on the comfort of a home that provides a space to prepare your meal.

Walking Meditation

Next time you’re walking outside, focus on the ground beneath your feet. Listen to the rustling leaves, feel the wind on your skin, and notice the rhythm of your footsteps. Breathe in the fresh air and observe how the clouds move across the sky. Appreciate the gift of two functioning legs that carry you, and feel gratitude for the clothes and shoes you have, available at your fingertips.

Cleaning Meditation

Before you start your next cleaning session, pause and reflect on what a privilege it is to have a space to clean. Your home is a place where you’ve slept, eaten, and lived. As you clean, notice the sound of the broom sweeping across the floor, the glimmer of freshly wiped surfaces, and the transformation of your space. Be thankful for your environment—it shelters, protects, and comforts you through the ups and downs of life.

Showering Meditation

As you run the water or let your shower warm up, appreciate the sensation of being cleaned. Feel your muscles relax as you wash your hair, and savor the soothing scents of your bath products. When drying off, notice how soft the towel feels against your skin and how luxurious the lotion is as it moisturizes. Appreciate the gift of clean clothes and the simple pleasure of being consistently clean.

Meditation doesn’t have to mean sitting cross-legged on a yoga mat chanting “ohm.” It’s not about stopping everything to do nothing. Meditation is about bringing awareness and appreciation to the actions you're already performing. It’s a practice that can be woven into your daily life. Once you start meditating, you’ll be surprised by how time seems to slow down and how the simplest tasks become more fulfilling.
