Unlock Your Style: Simple Steps to Build a Capsule Wardrobe

Updated: Jan 27

Hey girlfriend! Trends come and go, but style is forever. Building a wardrobe that doesn’t feel like a random collection of clothes can be challenging, but with some practice and patience, you can create the closet of your dreams. A capsule wardrobe is an excellent way to hone in on your personal style. It boosts confidence and saves time when getting dressed. Below are a few steps I took to help me build my capsule wardrobe.

Create a Vision Board

A capsule wardrobe is all about cultivating a closet that works for you. It's the difference between opening your closet and seeing a jumble of clothes, versus one that flows and fits together seamlessly. Before you declutter or go shopping, create a vision for your ideal wardrobe. Is it Y2K with low-rise jeans and velour suits? Coquette-inspired pieces full of ruffles and florals? Maybe you prefer streetwear with baggy jeans and chunky sneakers, or a more sophisticated look with button-down shirts and tailored trousers. Don’t feel pressured to fit into one category just yet. This is your time to experiment! Pinterest is a fantastic place to start. Try to understand your style blueprint before making any changes to your closet.

Build Now, Buy Later

Once you have an idea of your style, it’s time to focus on your current wardrobe. You don’t need to toss everything out and start over—just take a closer look at what you already own. What pieces do you wear most often? What are the common threads? Is there a color that flatters your complexion? A silhouette that makes you feel confident? Maybe you have a consistent style of shirts or pants that you reach for repeatedly.

If you're struggling to narrow it down, start by thinking about the clothes you never wear. If you were moving across the world and could only bring one suitcase, what pieces would you pack, and which ones would you leave behind? These items tell you a lot about your style. Build your capsule wardrobe around the clothes you already love and wear, and then add new pieces when needed.

Embrace Individuality

At the end of the day, your closet should serve one purpose: to make you happy and comfortable. Don’t feel pressured to buy a bunch of heels or mini dresses if they’re not your thing. It’s totally fine to admire a style without feeling the need to adopt it. As you explore influencers whose style you admire, always keep in mind your lifestyle and unique preferences. Add your own flair to the mix!

You might find inspiration in unexpected combinations, like gothic coquette or sophisticated streetwear. There are no hard-and-fast rules—unless you challenge yourself to downsize to a specific number of clothing pieces (but that’s up to you!). Take it one step at a time, and remember: this process should be fun. You’re building the closet of your dreams, after all.

With these tips, you’ll have a wardrobe that feels curated, intentional, and—most importantly—totally you. Happy styling, girlfriend
