Simple Solutions for Managing Adult Acne

Updated: Jan 27

Hey girlfriend! Acne is something many people deal with, especially during puberty. However, if you’re still battling breakouts as an adult, you may be wondering what steps you can take to tackle these persistent little monsters. Here are some actions that have worked wonders for me personally:

1. Water Intake

Increasing my water intake has been the most significant change in clearing up my complexion. I have oily, textured skin, so breakouts were almost inevitable, especially during that time of the month. However, I noticed an almost immediate breakout whenever I indulged in sugary drinks like sodas or coffee.

Now, while I still treat myself to a soft drink occasionally, I ensure I’m drinking plenty of water throughout the day to balance it out. Aside from feeling healthier overall, I’ve noticed my pores have shrunk significantly, and when acne does appear, it doesn’t linger nearly as long.

2. Consistent Skincare Routine

I’ve gushed about products in the past (like my love for Rhode skincare), but my biggest lesson has been that simplicity and consistency matter more than having a drawer full of products. I now wash my face twice a day, and that simple change has made a huge difference.

In the past, I was a product junkie, owning enough to rival a mini Sephora. But the layers of serums, acids, and peptides became overwhelming. I realized that my skin thrives not on fancy ingredients but on a consistent routine. You don’t need to buy the most expensive products; just find a few that clean and moisturize your skin, and use them daily. Your face will thank you for the consistency.

3. Clean Sheets and Sanitized Phones

While water and diet help cleanse your body internally, keeping external surfaces clean is just as crucial. I’ve made it a habit to wash my sheets weekly and sanitize my phone regularly. These small changes have made a big difference in reducing breakouts caused by bacteria.

I also stopped touching my face—a tough habit to break, especially when dealing with a giant zit. Our hands carry tons of bacteria, so keeping them away from your face is a simple but powerful change.

4. Stress Management

Stress and acne go hand in hand for me. Whenever I felt overwhelmed, it was as if my skin put my stress on full display. This, of course, led to more stress and more breakouts.

Learning to manage my emotions has helped me feel more in control of my life and my complexion. If I’m feeling overwhelmed, I talk it out with a friend or work out. Exercise not only helps detoxify my body but also keeps potential pimples at bay. Just be sure to clean up and shower right after a workout to prevent clogged pores.

While I still use makeup to conceal scars, I’ve found that focusing on simple, sustainable habits has made a world of difference in preventing breakouts. There’s no magic product or holy grail to banish adult acne; the secret lies in a combination of healthy practices.

Start small, stay consistent, and celebrate your progress. Your skin (and your confidence) will thank you!
