Hey, girlfriend! With spring just around the corner, you might be looking for ways to freshen up your space. I've always had a deep appreciation for Chinese culture, especially its philosophies—feng shui being at the top of the list. I’ll never forget the first time I practiced it myself and saw a complete shift in my love life. I went from no messages to going on multiple dates in a weekend! Of course, there’s no scientific evidence linking these two things to rearranging furniture, but the timing was uncanny. So, who knows? Whether you’re a firm believer or just curious, it doesn’t hurt to try a few of these tips to refresh your space for spring.
What is Feng Shui?
Feng shui originated in China over 6,000 years ago and is still widely practiced today. It's all about arranging your environment to improve the flow of chi—or energy—to create balance and harmony in your life. By adjusting your surroundings, you can enhance different aspects of your life, from love and career to health and creativity.
Basic Principles of Feng Shui:
Declutter: The first rule is to create space. A cluttered environment disrupts the flow of energy, while a clean, organized space allows chi to circulate freely, improving your overall well-being.
Let in Light and Air: Natural light and fresh air are essential for welcoming positive energy. Open your windows, let the sunshine in, and allow air to circulate to invite good chi into your home.
Use Plants (With Caution): Plants are powerful tools for boosting energy, but be mindful of the balance. Too many plants can overwhelm a room and create excessive energy. Choose wisely!
Clear the Path to the Door: Keep the entrance to your home free of obstacles, and avoid mirrors that face the door. You want to invite energy in, not push it away.
A Deeper Dive: Colors and Corners
North (Career): The entrance to your home or room represents your career. Use darker colors and water elements like deep blues, blacks, or metallics. Display items related to your profession that inspire you, such as business literature or company logos.
Northeast (Knowledge & Self-Cultivation): This space is about personal growth. Incorporate blue and green tones with earthy elements. Adding books, diplomas, or globes can inspire and remind you of your progress.
Northwest (Travel & Friendships): Focused on travel and relationships, the northwest corner thrives with metal elements and gray colors. Display photos of friends, mentors, or travel memories as reminders of life’s incredible moments.
West (Health, Children & Creativity): This area nurtures well-being, creativity, and family. Add yellow accents or items that symbolize fun and creativity—like board games or artwork.
East (Family): The family sector benefits from green tones and wood elements. Incorporate family photos or heirlooms to keep this area vibrant and remind you of the importance of meaningful connections.
Southeast (Wealth & Prosperity): The wealth corner thrives with gold, green, and purple hues. Consider adding amethyst crystals, plants, or decor that symbolizes growth and abundance. This area should feel uplifting and inspiring.
Southwest (Love & Relationships): This is your love corner. Use shades of pink and incorporate items in pairs—like two candles, two stuffed animals, or two pictures—to symbolize harmony and balance.
South (Fame & Reputation): The back of your space represents fame and reputation, linked to the fire element. Use red, animal prints, or bold symbols of power and success to boost your confidence and display your achievements.
Feng Shui for a Minimalist Lifestyle
Feng shui can be as subtle or elaborate as you like. For someone like me who leans into minimalism, I prefer simple touches that enhance the energy flow without overwhelming the space. For example, in my love

corner, I have two stuffed animals, and in my fame and reputation area, I display a neutral cheetah print picture—not too loud, but enough to keep things balanced.
Not everyone wants their home to look like a rainbow of colors, and that’s totally fine! The beauty of feng shui is its adaptability. You can incorporate elements like a wooden frame or a metal table that match your aesthetic while still honoring the principles of the practice.
The key is your intention behind the placement. Whether you’re a firm believer in feng shui or just experimenting with the “flow” of your space, I hope these tips help guide you in refreshing your home for the season. Happy decorating!
