Hey girlfriend! As warmer weather arrives and you start packing away your winter wardrobe, you might be wondering how to get the most out of your closet. Well, I’ve got three updated tips that will transform you into a minimalist with a capsule wardrobe.
What is a Capsule Wardrobe?
A capsule wardrobe is a curated, simplified version of your closet made up of versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched to create outfits for different occasions. Many of us may already have one, whether we know it or not, because we tend to rotate through the same favorite items—whether it’s the comfort of a cozy sweater or the fit of our go-to jeans. A capsule wardrobe is timeless, allowing you to wear your favorites repeatedly without getting bored.
Why You Should Consider It
How many times have you stared into your closet full of clothes and thought, “I have nothing to wear”? Yep, I’ve been there! I used to be the friend who was always late because I couldn’t decide what to wear—I'd change outfits at least three times before finally getting it right.

That all changed a few years ago when a friend gifted me a pair of loose paper bag pants. I loved them so much, and I ended up wearing them to dinner, an award ceremony, and even class! The same happened with a black turtleneck I wore last winter. I dressed it up for work or nights out, and dressed it down for casual days. I realized that getting dressed doesn’t have to be a stressful ordeal. With just a few tweaks, you can create the capsule wardrobe of your dreams.
How to Create a Capsule Wardrobe
Neutral colors are the foundation of a capsule wardrobe. Think blacks, beiges, blues, browns, and greys—these shades are easy to mix and match. Depending on your lifestyle, you can opt for different cuts or fabrics. For example, if you're a corporate boss, a cowl neck top or satin blouse might be more your style, while a relaxed profession might call for a cotton T-shirt or baggy jeans. You don’t have to avoid color entirely, but limiting yourself to one or two accent colors (and patterns) helps keep things versatile.
2. Allow for Authenticity
Pinterest is a great source of inspiration, but remember to stay true to your personal style. Many influencers include blazers in their capsule wardrobes, but if you rarely need one, it might not serve you—unless that’s part of your style. The same goes for shoes: if you’re not a fan of ballet flats (speaking from personal experience here!), replace them with something you actually love, like a pair of sneakers. The key is finding pieces that work for you and make you feel comfortable and confident.
3. Get Creative with Accessories
Accessories are the secret sauce to keeping your capsule wardrobe feeling fresh. While your shirts and shoes cover your body, accessories express your personality. A bold lip color, a different purse, or unique earrings can dramatically change an outfit. Just because your capsule wardrobe is built on basics doesn't mean you have to stick to simple looks unless that’s your style. If variety is important to you, let accessories be your creative outlet and personalize your wardrobe.
Building a capsule wardrobe can feel challenging at first, especially if you’re not sure what to keep or store away. Don’t worry! Start slow, pay attention to the pieces you naturally gravitate toward, and let the rest go to storage or the donation pile. A capsule wardrobe will not only help you develop a signature style, but it will also save you time getting ready—leaving you with more time to enjoy the world outside your closet.
