Eco Chic: Sustainable Product Swaps for a Greener You

Updated: Jan 27

Hey, girlfriend! We’re living in a time where sustainability is no longer just a passing trend—it’s becoming a way of life. With environmental concerns on the rise, it’s clearer than ever that the choices we make every day have a huge impact on our planet. The good news? More and more eco-friendly products are hitting the market, making it easier for all of us to contribute to the cause. From simple switches to long-term habits, every little step counts toward reducing waste, conserving resources, and living more consciously. I’ve rounded up some of my favorite sustainable products that not only help protect our planet but also make our daily routines a little greener. Let’s dive in!

Sustainable Toothbrushes

Most toothbrushes are made from plastic and are recommended to be replaced every three months. Switching to a bamboo toothbrush or an electric one with replaceable heads can reduce plastic waste. Electric toothbrushes come in both rechargeable and battery-operated options. My personal favorite is Quip—their sleek, minimal design makes brushing feel like a luxury experience!

Toothpaste Tablets

Toothpaste bottles are a significant source of plastic waste, but toothpaste tablets are a great alternative. At first, I was skeptical, but after trying them, I was hooked. The tablets foam up just like regular toothpaste, providing whitening and cavity protection without harmful preservatives. Plus, they often come in eco-friendly packaging.

Washable Cotton Pads

While cotton itself isn't the worst for the environment, the plastic packaging it often comes in is. Washable cotton pads are a fantastic alternative. They typically come in eco-friendly packaging and save you money in the long run, since you can reuse them instead of buying new ones every month.

Reusable Silicone Swabs

Reusable cotton swabs are another great alternative. The plastic handles of single-use q-tips add up quickly—did you know that the average person uses about 4 per day? That's over 1,400 plastic swabs per year! Silicone swabs are washable, and many have bamboo handles, making them a more sustainable choice. I found a great set that comes in a handy carrying case.

Refillable Products

More and more companies are embracing sustainability by offering sturdy, refillable packaging. Brands like Ouai (skincare) and Blueland (cleaning products) sell refills to help cut down on waste. I’m also loving Subtl makeup, which is travel-friendly and offers refillable cases. Research if your favorite brand offers a similar option, or check out TerraCycle and Bare Minerals, which accept returned packaging for recycling.

Deodorant was one of my first switches to more sustainable products—and I know many others feel the same way. With growing concerns over aluminum and skin sensitivity, people are looking for more eco-friendly options. After trying several brands, I found that Wild refillable deodorants actually work! They offer metal cases and a variety of scents, making it easy to personalize your routine.

Bar Soaps

Bar soaps are an eco-friendly classic because they require little to no packaging. I envy those who make their own, but you can find luxurious ones at stores like Lush or Etsy. If you prefer something from the drugstore, brands like Dove and Dial have great options. I also switched to shampoo and conditioner bars, which took some getting used to (especially the conditioner), but I don’t regret it at all! Kitsch is my go-to brand for my curly hair.

Diva Cups or Discs

Diva cups and discs are a sustainable and convenient choice for menstruating individuals. These products reduce waste from disposable items like tampons and pads. Despite some initial anxiety, I’ve found them to be amazing—they can stay inserted longer, don’t pose a risk for toxic shock syndrome, and are reusable. Just rinse, wash, and repeat!

While some of these products may seem intimidating at first, they’re definitely worth trying. Nature provides for us in countless ways, so the least we can do is take steps to protect it.
